Clinical trials involving the Emphasys Zephyr® Endobronchial Valve have focused on two applications; emphysema and air leaks.* The valves are intended to address the effects of emphysema by isolating the targeted diseased portion of the lung, causing a reduction in volume of the diseased region, allowing more air to be directed to the healthier portions of the lung and improving breathing mechanics.

The Zephyr Endobronchial Valve may also address the flow of air through persistent air leaks which sometimes occur following chest surgery, trauma, or secondary to other lung diseases. The valves are intended to reduce or eliminate airflow through the leak, allowing the tissue surrounding the opening to heal and prevent additional air from escaping through the lung.
