Emphysema took their breath away.
We’re working to give it back.
It’s estimated that 3.8 million people in the United States are currently diagnosed with emphysema. Worldwide many more than this number suffer from this debilitating disease. At Emphasys Medical, we’re committed to developing minimally invasive therapies to treat these patients.
Headquartered in Redwood City, California, Emphasys Medical has developed a new minimally-invasive treatment option for patients with emphysema. Endobronchial valve (EBV) therapy involves placing small one-way valves in the lung to prevent air from entering the most diseased regions while allowing fluids and trapped air to escape. The goal is to reduce the volume of the diseased portions of the lung, allowing increased ventilation to healthier areas of the lung.
The company’s Zephyr® EBV is CE marked and has been sold on a limited basis in Europe and in certain Asia-Pacific regions. In September 2007, Emphasys Medical submitted its application to the FDA for premarket approval to market the Zephyr EBV in the United States.
